Moms do beauty well. This is not a generalization, it's a fact. They practically invented make-up. Our generation just took some of the work out of it. Miss June Miller, mother of Benefit cosmetics co-founders June and Jean Ford, who was featured in my Lucky MMTSI column in (appropriately) June, inspired her beauty guru daughters. We had a cool idea to partner up and offer two copies of My Mom Style Icon along with their new chacha tint lip and cheek stain which makes beauty touch-ups a lot faster than mamma's make-up routine.
Folks in the US can enter to win the giveaway (ending 7/27/11) by commenting on this here post and answering the following question: what's your favorite makeup tip from mom? The winner will be randomly selected but I still want your mom's advice.

Sunscreen. Always!
Match your cheeks to your lips by using lipstick as rouge.
Apply anything you put on your face upwards. No use in helping gravity.
Protecting my skin from sun and other bad habits! My mom lived in Hawaii for part of her early teen years, and the popular thing to do was use MOTOR OIL (yikes!) as a tanning oil. She was also a smoker for a large part of her life, and regrets not taking better care of her skin and health. Sometimes the best advice is what not to do. :)
Though it is cliche - Less is more. Choose one thing to play up and only one thing.
Favorite makeup tip from my mom: "The best blush is a post-coital flush, so find a color that (ahem) fakes that." (My mom was quite frisky in her younger days, apparently.)
More of a skin care tip than a cosmetics tip, but my mom always told me "wash your face every night before bed, don't ever sleep in your makeup!".
Don't make it look like you're wearing it. The most successful makeup makes it look like you just rolled out of bed looking that fabulous.
My mom's best beauty advice was "always moisturize before bed." She is still a fabulous fashionista and I always follow her example, especially her belief that the purpose of makeup is to highlight your good qualities, not cover everything up.
Bisous,

My mom passed away two days before I turned 18, but she had already given me great advice! She told me if I would use Mary Kay cosmetics then she would pay for it for me. That was in 1976 and I have been using their cleanser ever since (and still love it).
Embrace your natural skin tone (i.e., the very pale skin she passed along to me). Don't pile on bronzer, it just ends up looking fake!
That you are beautiful without makeup.
Always check your teeth for lipstick.
Always wash your face at night before bed-don't go to bed with makeup on; never leave the house without lipstick!!
Rinse your hair with lemon juice to bring out the blonde.
Take it easy on the sun!
Take care of your skin - you don't get "do-overs". Keep it clean and keep it protected with moisturizer and sunscreen.
"Accentuate your natural beauty Your have a beautiful face and dont need much or any at all. People love the way you are and accept you for that! Never change." My mom
"Just put on a little lipstick, you'll feel so much better"
never leave home without your lipgloss!!
You're pretty without make up.
My mom's best beauty tip was to only choose one item to accent, eyes, or lips, go bold with one and not the other, or go simple.
My mother never really gave me a makeup tip, but I was presented with rather large makeup case with a very good variety of colors of eye shadow, lipsticks and blush when I was eleven. Ah the abundance of those years... I guess she gave me variety. I toned down the makeup when I turned thirty lol.
My mother always told me to always use lip balm...no one likes chapped lips!
My momma always looks fabulous and almost never leaves the house without bright lipstick. She plays it safe, too, by always having face moisturizer with sunscreen on hand. She applies it not only to her face, but her hands as well. I've taken on these little bits for myself...although I don't wear lipstick as often...
my mom's advice is to always put on serums at night for special care :)

My mom worked a cosmetics counter in the mid 60's and she loves makeup - she says to use it to enhance what nature gave you but have fun with it always!
Always use age appropriate makeup. You don't want to look too old or too young.
My mother told me to be careful with the mascara, that it was easy to use too much and then it would get all over the under eye area. I distinctly remember watching her carefully remove the little black dots from under her beautiful green eyes. She wore a little powder and sometimes eye shadow. . . . but ALWAYS wore lipstick if leaving the house - always - and reapply after eating! I miss her so much.
